Kids say the darndest things: from out of the mouths of babes…

A couple of cute stories.

Last week, after my Ad Writing Workshop, I hung around the hotel for a while to decompress and watch the NFL playoffs. My daughter was with me and she was hungry, so we went to order up some food for her.

Now the food service at the hotel, comes from Shula’s steakhouse, which is a four or five-star restaurant, owned by former Miami Dolphins coach, Don Shula.

Sam ordered a hamburger and the waiter asks her if she wants cheese. “Sure,” she says, and then the waiter starts telling her all the different kinds of cheeses she can get: American, Swiss, Cheddar, and so on.

She turns around, right there outside of Shula’s and asks me, “What kind does McDonalds put on their hamburgers?”

I was hysterical laughing at her frame of reference, and the waiter just shook his head and smiled.

Next story shows you how pop culture influences everything.

We’ve all listened to song lyrics that just aren’t clear enough to hear, and then substitute our own words for what we think the song is.

For example, songs like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by The Beatles, where the lyric is actually “A girl with kaleidoscope eyes,” is often mistaken for “A girl with colitis goes by.”

You know what I mean, right?

So last week I’m in the car on the way to the gym with my older son Casey, who’s almost 17.

A song comes on and it’s Foreigner, that old classic rock band from the late 1970’s. Suddenly, I hear my son singing out loud, at the top of his lungs, “Be a juice box hero,” and I burst out laughing.

Of course, the song is “Juke Box Hero.” In fact, back in 1981 when this song came out, there was no such thing as a “juice box,” and oddly enough, today… there really aren’t too many “juke boxes” around.

It’s these little innocent slices of life that make the day interesting.
