Quick story: Last weekend we went out to pick some blackberries at a local grower’s farm nearby.
Not sure if you’ve ever done this, but it’s very relaxing. And if you have children, it’s a really great family activity.
And of course, eating fresh blackberry pies all week long isn’t exactly a bad thing, either 🙂
Afterwards, the kids went back home, and Anne and I went over to our local Fresh Market store. Nothing like eating healthy, right?
While we were there, I was browsing through the greeting cards (I’m a sucker for good cards and stationery) and saw one that was particularly thought-provoking.
It said something to this effect: “If you didn’t know how old you were, how old would you be acting?”
This is pretty deep, isn’t it?
I’d never considered this, so I stopped and thought about this for a while, and there was a bit of a disconnect. Which tells me age is very closely tied to your behavior.
Here are some of the things that crossed my mind:
I don’t “feel” 47. And in fact, thankfully, because I’ve put a lot of effort into eating right and exercising… I probably don’t feel much different than I did at 25, physically. And in fact, mentally… I feel a LOT stronger and sharper.
But how old do I “act?”
Well, like most men with a sense of humor, I probably don’t “act” 47, either. (Thank goodness!)
To me though, the real question here… and the real issue here… is this: Are you acting older, or depriving yourself of good experiences because of your age?
And I don’t mean, are you doing less because physically, you can’t do the things you used to. I mean, are you behaving more reserved than you’d like to, because you’re “older.” (whatever that means – obviously this is different for everyone)
I really gave this a lot of thought, because who wants to be having less fun because they’re a certain age? I’d hate to think I was minimizing my good times because of a stupid thing like age.
And here’s what I came up with: If I were younger, I’d be working less and doing things like drinking and vacationing, a lot more.
But for me, not drinking and partying as much, has nothing at all to do with my age… and everything to do with the family and entrepreneurial responsibilities I have chosen to accept.
However, I believe I am lucky. I tend to NOT filter my thoughts, or my actions (which is a blessing AND a curse), and I am fortunate in that I can say and do and act on both of these things, without any kinds of reservations or hangups.
Not that I don’t make mistakes — Lord knows I make them by the dozens. But the mistakes aren’t made by “not” doing things I’d like to do. And for me, that’s important: no regrets.
I believe though, a lot of people don’t have this same emotional freedom. They are, for whatever reason, self-censored. Maybe some of this has to do with their upbringing… maybe some of this is because of some kind of shyness or insecurity… and I do believe, some of this is “age” related, like that greeting card suggested.
If this describes you… and if you wish you weren’t this way — if you wish you “acted” or “thought” younger… then please keep this in mind: the universe doesn’t know how old you are. It doesn’t care what you’re thinking or why you’re thinking.
Most of the things you worry about have nothing to do with anyone else, but you. These worries exist exclusively inside your own head.
And of course, the good news about this, is… it gives you the freedom to change, effective right now. So you can start “thinking younger,” and doing silly things once again.
And please do exactly this. I assure you, it’ll be worth your while.
Note: I’ve been out of touch this week because I’m a little behind on some writing, and I’m finishing up the June issue of Seductive Selling. Next week I’ll be back on track and more “regular.”
Have a great weekend.
