the "trouble" tree

I’m writing this on the run. I have a client coming down to (now freezing cold) Tampa for a day of consulting, so I’ll be brief.

Some announcements first, and then a heartwarming story.

One, if you happen to know how I can get a hold of Michael Agovino, author of “The Bookmaker” (a really cool book about growing up in The Bronx in the 1970’s), please tell him I said “Thank You!” for the signed book, and to send me his address so I can get him mine once it’s released.

And go buy Michael’s book, it’s great, and it’s on amazon at http://tinyurl.com/5pkb2c

Two, if you are a copywriter and you’re looking for some work, a close friend of mine may be able to use your help. Go to rentacoder.com and look up project number 1046421. This fellow is one of the most successful men I know and he’s also one of the brightest people I know as well. On top of that, he’s a gentle and kind soul and you’ll be lucky to work with him.

The rentacoder website isn’t the most user friendly site in the world, but don’t ask me how to look this up — if you can’t figure it out on your own, then it’s not meant to be.

And lastly, here’s a great holiday story:

A while ago I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill quit, and his ancient one ton truck refused to start. As I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.

When we got to his house, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. Upon opening the door he had undergone an amazing transformation. His tanned face was bathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.

Afterwards, he walked me to the car. We passed that tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do at the little tree. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, those troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again… Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

So gather your troubles and hang them up somewhere, and then…
